The Honeywell HFD-120-Q tower air purifier looks like a standard tower fan but is intended to also filter the air that passes through it. Several sites list this as a HEPA filter air purifier incorrectly. It actually features an IFD filter. IFD filters use an ionic process to charge particles in your air and cause them to be attracted to the filter as they pass through. Due to the differences in the way this type of technology works, fan speeds that are too high on such a unit could actually diminish the effectiveness of the air purifier.

There is also a pre-filter that will get the larger particles before they get to the IFD filter. Both filters are very low maintenance. The pre-filter should be washed with a bit of water and the IFD filter can be vacuumed clean or washed depending upon your preference. If you are going to wash the IFD filter you will need to make sure it is completely dried out before you return it to the Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower.

This air purifier is rated for smaller rooms that are 186 sq foot or smaller. It can easily be moved from room to room due to it’s tower form. It weighs in at approximately 14 pounds which is relatively easy to manage. This Honeywell air purifier also comes with a 5 year limited warranty so you don’t have to worry about defects or similar issues.

The second major feature of the Honeywell HFD-120-Q air purifier is that it is in the form of a tower. If you have ever had a tower fan, then you might notice after a bit of use that some of the parts in the fan start to rattle. Especially when it is an oscillating tower due to it’s moving parts. Several purchasers of this unit have reported rattling noises that started after a bit of use. Others have said that this unit is whisper quiet. Just keep in mind that oscillating fans have moving parts and it is possible that they could develop a rattling sound caused by parts becoming loosened during operation.

The bottom line on this air purifier is that there are definitely better units out there for the price. While most Honeywell air purifiers get excellent reviews and do a great job of protecting against allergens and other contaminants in the air, this air purifier seems to get mixed reviews primarily focused on the lack of efficiency in the IFD filter and the noisy rattles that tend to come from the fan after a bit of use. In this case I would definitely suggest that you check out a few other models in the under $200 air purifiers category.
