The Winix Plasmawave 5300 air purifier has several features that you do not find on most air cleaners. But first lets start with the basics. The Winix Plasmawave has the same basic filtration system as many other HEPA air purifiers. It utilizes a 3 stage air cleaning system to systematically remove contaminants from your homes air for the ultimate in healthy living.
The Winix Plasmawave 5300 Filters
The first filter in the device is a carbon pre-filter. It absorbs and collects odors and other organic compounds. This will leave the air in your space feeling fresh and clean. The second filter, and possibly the most important, is the HEPA filter. The high quality HEPA filter in this air purifier can remove 99.97% of particles in the air that are 0.3 microns or larger in size. The third filtration method is the plasma generator which utilizes the unique PlasmaWave technology. This is basically a UV filter that is meant to remove pollutants at the molecular level that aren’t caught by the other two filters. The plasma generator can be turned on and off.
What Can it Filter From Your Air?
This unit is rated highly by several allergy advisory groups and can remove dust, pet dander, pollen and other allergens. It also easily handles odors from pets, smoke, cleaning products and food smells from the kitchen. The plasma filter leaves the air feeling fresh and clean when it is turned on and the manufacturer claims that it does not release any ozone or other harmful byproducts into your air.
How Often do you have to change the filter?
The HEPA filters each last around a year (sometimes longer). The Carbon filters usually need to be replaced every 3 months depending on usage. You can buy the filters from the same retailers where you originally purchased the unit and they cost around $50. A filter pack consists of one HEPA filter and 4 carbon filters so it should easily last a year or more before having to be replaced again.
A unique feature of this brand or model is that it has a set and forget mode that monitors the air quality in the room and adjusts fan speed settings accordingly to consistently keep contaminants out of a room. This means no constant adjustments as conditions in your space change. You can also manually set the fan speed to one of 4 settings if you choose. The first two settings are very quiet and you will barely notice that it is operating. The third setting is not much louder and you can easily listen to a radio or television without it intruding. The 4th setting is quite obtrusive but the machine is really working hard at that point and this setting is rarely if ever needed but it’s nice to have it as an option. The CADR rating rates this air purifier for rooms up to 350 square feet in size.
This air purifier is energy star approved, comes with a 1 year limited warranty and has an indicator that lets you know when it is time to replace the filter. It has a modern look and feel to it and it’s auto fan speed adjustment is a nice addition to it’s controls.
